I have finally got my 536ep modem to work.

I downloaded Xandros O.C.E version 3.01 for 5 days over dialup (I paused and started it...) and got my 536ep modem to connect to the Internet!

I am now (offically,) a very happy user of Linux and will start to plan on using it for good. (I dual-boot to Windows XP.)

I see from your post above that you managed to get an 536ep modem to get online easily with Xandros OCE 3.01 earlier this year.

A friend and I have the same modem in our machines and have been trying to get on the net using Mandrake 10.1. We have been trying for quite a while without success. I think it may be time to get another distro and try.

Wondering if you could update us on whether you have managed to easily get online with this modem and any other distro or an updated Xandros?

I am quite new to Linux and have not been online with it on my machine yet.

Well, because i had (accidentally) changed a setting in the Boot Loader, i couldn't boot Xandros anymore, which in turn made me to decide to try out another distro. I was also ordering Ubuntu (http://shipit.ubuntulinux.org), to i decided to give Ubuntu a go.

I found out how to install the 536ep Modem driver on Ubuntu's Wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntelFiveThreeSixEPModemHowto) and followed the instructions. It turned out to be very easy.

By the way, I'm trying out MandrivaLinux 10.1 and Knoppix 4.02 (i'm pretty sure of it being detected and loaded with a driver, as the Knoppix system has great hardware support)

I forgot to ask if your modem is a Dick Smith XH1154 pci modem (like mine), or is your's an external serial modem?

Would be interested to hear from you when you get online with Mandriva 10.1 or Knoppix 4.02.

I am using the Dick Smith XH1154 pci modem.
i only brought it because it said "supports linux".

I'm downloading Knoppix 4.0.2 DVD (taking a long time over Bittorrent) and SUSE Linux 10.0 OSS GM 5-CD (over bittorrent as well).

Also, i found that KNOPPIX (it's about the 3.2 version) that it only detects NOT installs a driver for the 536ep modem...

Oh well... I'm trying my luck on SUSE as it says that "includes a 536ep driver" though many people say that it's incomplete.

Thanks Manhinli. I now have a Ubuntu 5.04 install cd. I think I will install it and have a go at getting online with my XH1154 now that I know you have succeded with it. Thanks for the reassurance.

I have been struggling with the xh1154 modem also. Got it installed and sort-of working on Fedora Core 3, but it never stays connected for more than an hour or so; usually less. (By the way, "make install" didn't work for me, I had to follow the extra instructions in the readme).

Data transfer just stops, but kppp isn't aware of any problem, doesn't re-dial. I pick up the phone and get a dial tone, but kppp continues to think it's connected, for hours (overnight).

I captured /var/log/messages for a session, and it appears there is a problem with the spin_lock kernel calls from the 536ep driver - below is a snip of last night's session (I connected, started a "yum update", it ran for several minutes, and I went to bed. This morning, yum was still trying to work and kppp was still connected, but nothing happening. I don't know for sure, but I don't think the "crond/pam_unix" or "gconf" lines indicate any problems.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Brian,

Well first of all, it seems that you are using the WRONG driver. The one supplied with the modem is a MandrakeLinux 10.0 driver. (the log states that the driver is in /intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-mdk10-UP/ in which mdk10 means that is for Mandrake10.)

The problem could also solved with a new version of the driver: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...9&submit=Go%21.
But it seems that the new version has not been published for the Fedora Core 3 OS yet.
Get the latest one (as of 25/11/05) is at: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...inux*&lang=eng
for the uni-processor (UP) systems and at: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...inux*&lang=eng for symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems.

Hello manhinli ! Thanks for the response.
Good spotting. I have tried three different drivers so far, that Mandrake one (I did not realise it was Mandrake), and the Intel 4.69 and 4.70 Fedora Core 3 ones from the Intel web site; but I hadn't tried the pre-compiled one you linked to. I'll try that one next, and I believe there is a 4.71 as well now. In each case so far, the "install" fails for me, but the instructions in the readme for "the bare minimum, if the install fails", works. After trying 4.69 and 4.70 I went back to the first driver I got working, because as far as I can see they all behave exactly the same.
Also, that spin_lock message in /var/log/messages has not re-occured, and nothing else unusual has shown up, unfortunately. May have to find a real modem, if I can't crack this soon.

Well, all the different flavours of the XH1154 driver (latest attempts: 4.70, 4.71) behave the same - connection lost and phone line hung up after (at most) an hour or so, but kppp doesn't realise and never re-dials.

External serial 56K modem works perfectly.

I guess many eyes doesn't make *all* bugs shallow.

I haven't been on LQ for a long time and now I have finally been able to reply to everyone.

I have been trying with a lot of distributions over the last few weeks, like Ubuntu, Knoppix, and SuSE.

I only got it to work on a few...
Some required out of this world dependencies (Package hell...)

To show what I have experienced, I have made a list (some are old; I just can't keep downloading):

• Knoppix 4.02: See below for the instructions.
• SuSE 9.2 Professional: Knows what it is but doesn't have the driver. When I try to install the official Intel drivers it goes nuts.
• Mandrakelinux 10.1: Dependency hell when trying to install Intel drivers.
• Ubuntu 5.04: Works fine after installation of Intel drivers
• Ubuntu 5.10: After following the instructions on Ubuntu's wiki, the modem could never connect, even after the installation of the drivers.

Just to answer Uxq's question, I have NOT tried the 536ep modem with Damn Small Linux.

I am thinking of trying Gentoo and Slackware.

I have finally made 536ep modem work on Knoppix 4.0.2! Really!

You will need the uncompiled driver from http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...inux*&lang=eng

Now you will need to type in EXACTLY the following commands and press [ENTER] after every command: (this assumes that you are in the HOME folder)

tar xzf Intel-536EP-4.71.tgz
cd Intel-536
sudo make clean
sudo make 536
sudo make install
sudo cp Intel536.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers
sudo depmod -a
sudo /bin/bash Intel536_boot restart
sudo modprobe Intel536

After the modprobe command, there should be no response.

Now you can run KPPP, set the PORT to /dev/modem, set to Hardware flow control and CR/LF line termination.

Now you can run the internet from KNOPPIX.

REMEMBER: This is only tested on KNOPPIX version 4.0.2 without any modifications.
