GRUB Survivor
I was greeted this morning by a black screen showing "GRUB _" with the cursor flashing and no useful response from the keyboard.
I put in the fedora CD (that is my distro) and selected "Rescue existing installation" - it got as far as "running /sbin/loader" and hangs. I followed some online advice and rebooted, hit [TAB] over the "Rescue existing installation" and appended the following: floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 clocksource=acpi_pm now it only paused briefly on "running /sbin/loader" and continued to the usual text/graphic screeens. Sad to say, it could not open a shell on my existing installation and couldn't find grub in /boot so I decided to try an alternative path... I happen to have a CD for Ubuntu 7.1 in my office and it also has a rescue option. Selecting this quickly took me to the menu where I choose how I want to go into the shell without jacking with any settings - thank-you Ubuntu for that ! I select my drive and I can see all my files under /home (phew! - there is hope) - thank-you Ubuntu for that ! cd into /boot and type "grub" and I finally have a "grub >" prompt ! - thank-you Ubuntu for that ! type "root (hd0,0)", then "setup (hd0)" and I get positive looking messages - thank-you Ubuntu for that ! I am now typing this in my restored Fedora which now has another black mark against its name - thank-you Ubuntu for that ! |
