Another one bites the dust!
 

A friend of mine who's a total computer newbie recently bought a brand new emachine from Walmart. It came setup with XP Home Edition for emachines. He called me Sunday and asked if I could have a look at it because it was running extremely slow. I went over there and sure enough it was unbelievably slow and the longer you used it the slower it got. One problem was that he had visited some websites that had placed dialers and other links in his startup menu and cluttered his desktop with all kinds of icons. I got rid of all that stuff but no help. I asked him if he cared what OS he ran and he said no. He hasn't been using computers long enough to know M$ Winblows from chopped liver. I took a chance and installed Suse 8.1 on there. Install went without a hitch. I did have to loan him an external modem but I wasn't using it anyway. Talked to him today and asked how his machine's doing and he said great. He's having lots of fun learning a new OS. He mostly uses his machine for surfing and e-mail anyway so he shouldn't have to learn a whole lot about Linux unless he just wants to. Anyway, chalk one up for our side. TAKE THAT, MICRO-SUCK!

Seems to me this is more of a Success Story. Moved to Success stories, instead of Linux - General where questions are asked regarding Linux.

Yea! One of many things I love about Linux is its blazing speed compared to Windows. I had to fall back on Windows 98 the other day due to an electrical storm knocking out my DSL (power-line conditioner/surge protection on the way now, to install tomorrow with any luck!)--and I was chagrined once again at (1) slowness, (2) lack of stability, (3) general STUPIDITY of that system.

Also, I had it in my head that Linux display was slightly, or a lot (depending on the app.) inferior to what I had been used to with Windows. Shows how memory deceives, because Windows definitely looked far WORSE (including anti-aliasing) than my Mandrake 9.1 ever looks.

Back in business with Linux now and with even more appreciation than before!
