Why I came over to Linux

Hi everyone, as my alias suggest I wanna know about Linux as I already know some about Windows.
Especially older systems seem to run safer with Linux.
I have one Dell notebook running with Linux Mint, although there's some trouble there.
This notebook does not shutdown properly, no idea what the problem is here.
Perhaps the Dell brand causes trouble as drivers are not free.
So I'm intriged about the do's en don't with Linux.
Hope to become a pro with Linux this way as I am already with Microsoft OS.
