what flavour do I have?


just got this Linux machine on the web. I would like to know how I can tell what flavour of Linux I have. I am a newbie.

cat /etc/issue

will usually tell you.

lol, oops! try looking through /etc to see if you can find a file with the distro name, e.g.: /etc/DISTRONAME-release.

did you get linux pre-installed, buy a friend's box, etc.? just wondering how you don't know what distro you have.

about the flavour

bought at Salvation Army for $5.00 (Can). 6 GB hardrive in an older IBM machine. Got inside and edited /etc/shadow. Just got online with it today. Actually forgotten what I did for it to recognize DHCP.
