very pleased to meet you all. scroll down for short story. :)

First, thank you for the time you put into this forum! I’ve used it a lot over the past four months and your conversations and advice about trouble-shooting and different distros have been incredibly helpful. Hopefully I’ll have something to contribute someday.

So, I'm feeling the need for some serious cheerleading, as all I did was insert a disk and yet I feel like the god of pooter-world (don't smite me, please). I’d only used open/free software and programs on windows before, so little-no experience here.

In less than 3 months, I’ve
1] installed a dual boot for XP and mint (it’s all Julia, 10, same DVD installation disk) on my home desktop,
2] installed a dual boot for Win7 and mint at my shared-user work computer (university computer admin guys had deemed it useless), and
3] over-written (is that a word?) vista to install mint on my partner’s laptop.

Now they all start up and shut down in 5 seconds and do whatever we want them to. Best of all, my co-workers and partner *love* learning where things are and asking questions, which is the biggest change.

Baby steps -- baby steps -- I can’t wait to learn more about how things actually work and different OSs, but these GIs are a great start for point-clickers, and it's all there when I'm ready and have more time to play. For now, I'm enjoying the occasional blip if something actually does go wrong or not as I expect it to, because it means I'm going to be learning more about how things actually work.

Short story: Huzzah!

Welcome aboard. Check out about a zillion videos about Linux on YouTube.com. Lots of good stuff there. Since you are running Linux you don't have to worry about viruses.
