SuSE 10: No line drawing in console fonts?

Running c-code application from command line, older versions of SuSE display standard ansi line drawing set in extended char positions if appropriate font pre-selected, e.g. 'setfont m.fnt'

SCO unix has this by default, and RedHat can also be persuaded.

Running same code on same (or any other) font setting, newly installed SuSE 10 produces no extended chars at all. Yet 'old' YaST run from same command line does, responding to whatever font is pre-set. It is as if extended chars are suppressed by default, but YaST gets around it. How? Any ideas?
