New recruit: The journey from XP to Slackware
Hi there.
I was an XP user until a recent laptop meltdown necessitated the installation of a new HDD. The bad news: I lost everything on my hard drive disk. The good news: I get to start all over.
I reloaded XP, but it felt wrong putting it back onto that fresh new disk. Like taking a shower only to then put on dirty, ill-fitting clothes. Then, by chance, I stumbled across Ubuntu.
I loaded Ubuntu onto my work computer (double-boot with XP) and have been taking it for a long test drive. I like it, but it is too much for my Dell Inspiron 6000 (256RAM). So in a quest for a lean and simple Linux-based OS I found Puppy_4.1.2 and of course I am in love. LOVE, I tell you.
But if Linux distros were bicycles, Puppy would be a recumbent unicycle. To learn Linux I need an OS that is a bit less of a lark. And so, having tried everything in my power to avoid it, I am making a commitment to learn Slackware. In the long run it is the only way I will truly understand what I am doing and why.
And so I am purchasing the Slackware 12.2 DVD. The purchase symbolizes my commitment not just to the OS but to the community. I plan for this to be a long, arduous journey. Of course, anything less would bore me.
With that I introduce myself: Hello, I'm Dennis: Slacker-in-Training.
