Howdy folks. (and everybody immediately asks, "Wonder what part of Texas he's from?") It's terribly hot and humid here in Southeast Texas this time of year, and I need any excuse I can find to stay inside in the air conditioning as much as possible, at work and at home both. So I thought I'd begin the way over due task of learning Linux and beginning to use it. I've chosen Ubuntu, (do I hear cheers,... groans, ...snickering?) So far I'm impressed. I'm nearly 70, started with MS-DOS 2.11 and Deskmate on a Tandy 1000SX back in 1987, I think. Soon dumped Deskmate and stayed with DOS until Windows 3.11. Skipped Windows ME and 2000 both. Almost skipped Vista and just really am not interested in upgrading to Windows 7. Would like to switch to Linux.
So, I've determined to build myself a Linux server and connect my network to it. Good idea, huh? At this point I don't even know what questions I need to ask. What led me to this site was trying to find how to find a driver for my Belkin Wireles G USB Network adapter so that when I boot my Vista box on the live Ubuntu USB drive, I can connect to the Internet. For right now though, I think the wisest thing I can do is run a cat 5 cable over to the nearest router and worry with the wireless adapter later. If anyone has any advice they'd care to share that would make it easier for me to rapidly become super proficient (of course I'm serious) in Ubuntu, I would deeply appreciate it and would tell my grand kids what nice people you are. If you'd prefer to look the other way and pretend you haven't noticed me, I think I probably understand. Either way, God bless you, and I thank you. PS, I don't do MySpace, Facebook, Twitter or the like. Don't trust 'em. |

( Kidding!! :p ) Welcome to LQ! Very nice to have you aboard; You'll figure out in time what questions you need to ask, but to be sure, there are an abundance of answers already waiting for you, so check out the 'Search' page first with some general terms related to your question, and if you can't find the help you need, by all means, ask! Again, welcome - and enjoy! Sasha |
Hi and welcome to LQ, looking forward to your participation.
If you are using ubuntu it should connect to the internet through the cat 5 automatically. Most of the pci wireless will also be detected. Depending on which kind you may have some setup steps. There are a lot of articles to help with the wireless, just make Google your friend. Speaking of our location, living in a travel trailer and lost a/c today. They say will be monday before fixed. Bought two fans and going to try and tough it out. |
