New member intro

Have been a Solaris user for some time and just moved into the world of Red Hat. Looks like this site will be very helpful.

Welcome to LQ.

Do you mind if I ask what was the reason for your decision to jump ship from Solaris to Red Hat? Did you upgrade your equipment at the same time or did you just replace the OS on the same equipment? I am compiling some statistics on reasons for people changing computer operating systems for an article I am researching.

Thanks.

In both cases the OS was specified by the application supplier. The original application is supplied by Foxboro (Invensys Process Systems) and is a SCADA system providing realtime monitoring of an electricity distribution network. The application is being replaced in part by a similar system, but with enhanced functionality, by GE. So the OS selection was not mine and the change to Linux from Solaris is application driven. Hope that helps.

Geting my feet wet.

I have been around since the pc was introduced and have gone through all the versions of MS Windows. Now I am really interested in Ubuantu because it is FREE with applications. I have tried two flavors to date, Kubuntu and Ubuntu Hardy Heron. I still have a lot to learn and an having some difficulty managing ownership and rights. My grandson knows far more about all that than I. Looking forward to experimenting with the Linux operating systems. Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks. It is surprising how many applications drive the selection of a Linux distribution.

Thumbs up Newbee that's just an oldee!!

I just sit back and watch! Why? Because I'm 85 and am good for about a 3hr day and what I do on computers is on Windows because that is where I cut my teeth.
I run Puppy Linux when I get the time but I am a slow learner.
Don't expect anything from me because as I say, now I am a watcher. But if ever I do get stuck it might be nice to have a few sympathizers.
A brief background:- I am a ex farmer from the Darling Downs in Queensland, Australia. Since "retiring" I have run a photo mini lab (and boy was I glad to get out of that), a tribal jewellery store with my wife (I was glad to get out of that too, but my wife wasn't) and I still run a small dial up ISP, the first in the city of Toowoomba (100,000) but now slowly going under from the pressure of the Broadband development.
If you don't weaken, life can be fun, except when you get involved with computers, then it can be a pain in the arse.
