Unhappy New Linux guy here. Hello and a warning - I'm gonna ask Questions!

Hi:

I'm new here. My name's Bill. I'm a programmer by trade, who is new to linux, coded Unix (10 years ago) and I am going to build a DVR (Maybe Myth box) out of an old HP xw4100 I have. I recently bought a Phillips saa7130/34 card and Wireless Keyboard and remote.

well I'm trying to choose which flavor/build to use. I've dickered with Ubunto, Have heard good things about Mythbunto, I know that Red hat supports this workstation, and as I read this site more and more, I understand I am less and less clear on what to choose. My main goal is to use this to cache TV, and convert some VHS and Digital Home movies to DVD.

As I head forward, if anyone has any advice --both what and what not to do -- Let me have it.

Thanks in advance for any help or assistance you can point me toward, and wish me luck.

Bill C

Welcome to LQ. As you probably know, all Linux is pretty much the same at the kernel level, but everything changes by the time it is a full distribution. Questions are always welcome, although when it comes to TV, I will not be answering any of them. Mythbuntu is probably your best bet, but probably any major distribution will work. Incidentally, Red Hat is a commercial distribution these days (it includes support, but is also quite expensive), so Fedora is the place to focus for the open source version. Good luck in any case.
