New Guy With A Problem

I used Ubuntu some years ago but never knew what I was doing. A couple years ago I had someone else convert a Toshiba that was running Windows 8.1 to Ubuntu 16.04 and have been using it also not knowing what I was doing.

Since then I have upgraded to 18.04 plus added GIMP and Calibre which are workings which surprised me since I did not know what I was doing. However, that not knowing has caught up with me. I have failed repeatedly in my attempts to add Wine and Adobe Digital Edition.

Is there anyone that can walk me through the necessary steps one at a time? Keeping in mind that I have VERY limited understanding of how Ubuntu works.

Hi,

maybe start at https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManag...ation&iId=6326
This shows what success has been achieved with different versions of wine and Adobe Digital Editions.

See https://appdb.winehq.org/ to understand the meaning of "Gold", "Platinum" etc.

From this you should be able to work out what version of wine you need, then we can consider how to install it.

I don't seem to understand how to post a Reply on the Forum either. Tried to use Quick Reply and it went into cyber space.

I thank you very much for your reply and the links.

I have been to the web page that your link was for and tried to follow the HowTo/Notes for installing Adobe Digital Edition 4.0. I think I tried it more than once but I have tried so much 'stuff' from the Internet that I don't know anymore what I have tried. Just know that everything I have tried failed.

This is as far as I got:

edlfrey@penguin:~$ wine --version
-bash: wine: command not found
edlfrey@penguin:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
!!! PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REPOSITORY IS DEPRECATED !!!

In fact, it's double deprecated -- it was replaced by the Wine Builds PPA, which was then itself replaced.

For more information, please see:

https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/win...ch/117104.html

The following commands can be used to add the new repository:

wget https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key
sudo apt-add-repository 'https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/'
More info: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
Press [ENTER] to continue or ctrl-c to cancel adding it
wget https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
gpg: keybox '/tmp/tmpfq4qa124/pubring.gpg' created

edlfrey@penguin:~$ sudo apt-key add Release.key

Most of that adobe stuff is now locked to registry in simple terms. Not easy to move from windows to linux.

Hi,

please slow down. From the link I gave you, have you determined what versions of wine and ADE you want to install/use?

New Guy With A Problem

I thought I would select something that was not too old that had only minor issues. So tried ADE 4.0, I failed repeatedly trying 4.5.

So to slow down I would now like to try ADE Version 1.7 with Wine 1.9.16 which has been tested on Ubuntu 16.04 and rated Platinum. Don't have a clue How To.

Talking New Guy With A Problem

Solved the Problem - I think.

I have been at it most of the day and after more failures I now have ADE 1.7.2 installed and have downloaded two books. It may be too soon to say Solved but this is by far the best that I have been able to do. I thought I had installed Wine 1.9.16 as well but when in use the command wine --version I get 4.0.1. I don't care as long as it is working.

A lot of false starts during the day so I don't really know what I did and probably could not do it again without a lot of errors and false starts.

Thanks evo2 for getting me to look outside of the box!

KC1D1,

I tried using playonlinux and had repeated failures. Probably just a case of not knowing what I was doing.

Thanks for the posting and the suggestion.

Hello and welcome to the forum edlfrey.

It sounds like you are going through a learning curve in learning Linux / Ubuntu that all of us have gone through. So, do not give up!
