Monitor problems

Hello all.
I have the Hardy Heron operating system from Ubuntu. I have a Hanns moniter. Yesterday I downloaded a number of updates one of which asked me to change the settings for my monitor. I did not put in that the monitor was a Hanns, rather checking off a monitor type HW (as I recall) and then resetting the system. last night that resulted in a significant enlargement of the items on the screemn. I tried to change it but was unsuccessful. It was late and I closed down thinking I would fix it today. I have opened up my computer and the screen now seems partially transparent and there are 4 copies of the Ubuntu log in screen laid one over the other and impossible to read.
I have tried to boot the system using the recovery mode options after the "grub" screen comes on. Tried about 4 of them with no success.
I have checked all connections.

Not sure where to go from here and would appreciate any help you might provide. If I need to relaoad the OS is there any way I can svae a few files.

Many thanks to anyone out there and it is a pleasure to join this group

If you have a USB flash drive or external hard drive to back your files on to, that would be handy. You can use a Live CD to mount your hard drive and then copy the files across. At the same time (or before) you could try and remove the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf then reboot into your installed OS. Any display settings in that file will be gone so you may be lucky there. Let me know if you would like me to elaborate further.
