long time reader - finally got around to registering
hello everyone,
my name is andrew, i'm 21, i live in canberra, australia, and i've been using computers ever since i was about four or five. ..... i don't know how well i would be able to spell right now, if it wasn't for games like king's quest, and reader rabbit. ahhh, memories. *sigh* back to my introduction. i have been using windows for as long as i can remember (i think prior to version 3.0) and i have been interested in linux since i started a tafe course on software development in 2001. i had a lot of hardware around the house, and i built a very simple computer to use red hat 7 on for practice. i liked using it, but it was fairly limited what i could do with it (no internet connection, low spec hardware). it was still good for some programming study i was doing out of my school courses. i also had a smoothwall server running for a few years, although that was just something very simple, and i did not find it as interesting to work with as a desktop workstation system. eventually (very soon i hope), i am going to configure another dedicated server (i have the hardware, but not the time), possibly using something like slackware instead. after red hat, i moved on to using mandrake. i installed version 9.0 (from a magazine cd) and found it difficult to configure some of the hardware i had on my new computer (things were fixed for version 9.2, but i didn't have access to it). we got a broadband connection a while ago, and i then was able to download and install mandrake 10. i loved the operating system because it configured everything for me, it was nice to look at, and it just worked so well..... but the problem i had was that things were done automatically, and i just wanted to know more about what was happening. ..... this is the main reason i moved to slackware 10 about two weeks ago.. i have a list of many things i still have to configure or install, but every time i research how to do something, get errors, find out how to fix them, etc... i just learn so much in the process. i don't mind at all that i am taking my time, i just really love understanding what i am doing. i still consider myself a new user to linux, as i have a great deal more experience using windows, but i plan to use my slackware computer as my primary computer as soon as i possibly can. i have both operating systems on the same desktop box, running from lilo. i probably won't post many questions here, as i'm more comfortable researching my problems by myself rather than risk looking stupid, but i will try to help anyone else here if i actually can. well, i'd better get back to configuring a few things. this has become a long post, and it has drawn out a little too much..... besides, i'm having withdrawls from typing away at the console..... i really should try and get more than four hours sleep for once too. ..... when does this officially become an addiction? - andrew |
