Unhappy Locked screen and password stopped working

Newbie: I installed Novell SUSE Linux v10. I locked the screen (as I had done many times before) and the password stopped working I don't know how I'm going to unlock Linux to get to the desktop again. I wanted to try switching the user to root to unlock the desktop but I don't think that I'm doing it right. I got myself in a mess somehow and I was doing so well - please help! Thank you so much.

It's funny that your lock doesn't work, but you were able to login. Anyway, to kill the lock on the screen so you can log in as root and possibly fix it is just hit alt+ctl+backspace. This kills the xserver and restarts it. You will shortly arrive at the login screen again.
