language and technology

I'm a brazilian teacher of Portuguese, working on Phonetics, specifically Acoustics Phonetics, and Semiotics, in the Speech Syntesis field. We are creating here in our university (UFMG, Brazil) a new field of research, Language and Technology, and we have a strong interest in create an institutional space for freeware and source free code systems, by stimuling the uses of this kind of techonolgy here. I just pop into Linux because of that, and I'm in love with that. I work also with xoops, praat and R (statistics), all of them open source codes.
I hope you will help me on such a project and I hope, too, that I will learn enough in order to help someone else as son as possible.
Thanks.
Ana Matte UFMG Brazil

Oi Ana!

Seja bem vinda ao site LQ.org . I'm glad to see the open source being put to some good use. I hope that we can help you whenever you need help with Linux as well.

I would like to point you at some links that you may find useful:

- Installing programs in Linux:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45094

- Using apt-get and yum with Fedora core for an easy way to update and install programs:

http://www.fedora.us/wiki/FedoraHOWTO

- If you are looking after a rpm package for your distro, but having a hard time to find, this is a nice place to look at:

http://rpm.pbone.net/

- If you like a program in Windows, and would like to know if Linux has an equivalent, check this table:

http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

- If you are into games, a hole lot of Windows games runs under Linux through Cedega:

http://www.transgaming.com/

- If you simply can't find a replacement for Linux and just _have_ to run a Windows application under Linux, you might want to check out these:

http://www.winehq.com/

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/

Boa sorte com o projeto tambem.

Regards!

Thanks for your answer, it will be helpfull. Just one comment: the first link you put there is broken. (The requested URL /quest...;threadid=45094 was not found on this server.)
I'm looking for something here, but I'll try to find it before putting my questiot in the correct forum/place.
Thanks again.
