Just a Girl-Geek, Learning Linux...
I've been a geek since I got my first computer (Atari 800XL), and it only got "worse" when I discovered UNIX and Linux. I love this platform!
I'm currently dual-booting Windows ME and Redhat 9. The Millennium is going to go soon; I just installed my system's "restore" disk because well, I don't know. I hate that OS. I'm going to replace it with 98SE, just to run a few games and apps that I don't have Linux replacements for yet. The Redhat is probably going to go, too. I'm going to give Gentoo a try. The entire reason I wanted to install Linux was so I had control over what was going on, and I don't feel I have that with Redhat. I don't know how much trouble I'll have with Gentoo, but I'm going to give it a try. While I'm at it, I should say something non-geeky about myself. I'm 29, female, from Michigan, getting married in April, and I'm a total bookworm. These forums seem wonderful and I'm happy to be here. |
Welcome aboard, I have only been here for about a month but using Linux / Solaris for 5 /4 years. Most of these people are a great help .. I run RedHat 7.3 I feel I have full controll over my system just took a bit of poking around. I have never tried Gentoo but IMO RedHat is the way to go (7.3.... I HATE the newer versions)

welcome from another newbie (in name only)
If you want to try a good troublefree live distro with easy to use KDE based interface.. try Knoppix. I run a few live distro's in addition to my RH box - mostly so I can carry a CD on-site to work with when doing network security/data recovery. Its nice to pop in a CD, boot to linux and have the original OS intact when rebooting |
Glad to have you here!
I tend to not post much here, but I do read. I'm still more questions than answers, and I find most of my answers through searching the forums.
I, too, left RH awhile ago - too bloated and icky. I'm still running Mandrake on one machine (best auto-detection of hardware I've found), but I'm experimenting with Debian an Slackware on my other machines right now. Linux first appealed to me because I can make it do what I want, when I want. Totally modular and configurable. I like that. Really I just wanted to say, "Welcome!" to a fellow geek-girl. I'm 33, just got married this past summer, and I still love science and technology. -Waylena |
It took me a couple of tries to get Gentoo going but it is worth it. I still haven't finished. I spend a lot of time looking for people I can help.
Welcome to LQ. You need to get rid of that ME though. ;) Later :D :D :D Oh, compile your own kernel. It takes time but I never could get the other one to work right. |
Thank you, all of you, for the warm welcomes and the various suggestions!
I'm glad this is such a welcoming place. :) |

Ah ha! I had the 600XL (still have it in fact) with the cassette tape storage unit thing. I'm sort of new here, I read the posts but never registered. I think I'll go play Ms. Pac Man on my Atari 600XL :D I have Mandrake 9 btw...trying to get my modem to work! I'm sure you'll see me around whining about that. Anyway, see you around. |
I recently throwed away my old Commodore Vic-20. That was a while back. I think it had 4K of memory.
I must be getting old. Later   :D :D :D |
You should definatly try http://forums.gentoo.org . Very nice people there and lots of great tips :)

Anyone remember the "Adam" by Coleco, the toy company? I had my baby girl pounding away on that, playing a note and changing the screen color with each key press. I must have done *something* right along the way, as she's a Smith "cum laude" graduate in a Doctorial program at BU in Mathematics.
Boy am I *old*!! I always love to see females in non-traditional "baby-boomer" roles and hopefully in the workplace. It sure keeps the workplace more sane. Dave F. |
