Introductory mail

Hello to all the members,
My name is Yash Pal. I am 62, a Civil Engineer who has taken up a job with an Architectural firm after retiring from Govt Service.I live in Bangalore (Fraser Town), India and was born in what is now Pakistan. During my earlier service, I was posted to different parts of the country.
I am new to computers and the limited exposure I have had is to Windows OS. I believe that the Industrial revolution came about because a lot of people made a lot of discoveries and inventions and the basic Scientific Knowledge was freely available. For something similar to happen in computing, the base,(OS) must be freely accessible, may be commercial applications have to be paid for, like it happened for cinematography, light bulb etc.
I use Fedora core 5 but all the distributions are Greek and Latin to me.I hope to be proficient in Greek at least if not Latin also. I have no interest in music, games etc on computer but only in purely day to day functional use.

Welcome and excellent 1st post!
Bangalore has a strong Open Source community, and we are seeing a lot of users come in from your neck of the woods.

Just a tip, edit your profile to show your location (Bangalore) and the distribution you use.
