Introductions as the kind alert suggested while I was posting to the LFS forum:
Does anyone want to help an extreme Linux Newb? If you are the nerd rage or political type please refrain from answering. Surprisingly, people can get carried away from a simple question. 0.o
I just want to discuss Linux so that I can decide how to go about building my distribution; and I'm not an expert so naturally I didn't say developing. I apologize if this request sounds forth right before hand. It's just I get told RTFM and a lot of other high class statements as of late. I have some Linux skills. This isn't a "for hire" advertisement either. Although if the information got more than your friendly user replies we might be able to discuss paypal payment for your help. In the spirit of the GNU Public License, I don't think it is appropriate but I've met some brash computer users. In fact, I had to move on to Linux today after contemplating an LFS build because I reloaded Windows too many times and ran out of activation codes. That's fine though because Windows is for poop anyway in my opinion (no reference to Mr. Gates of course). It's just mindless PC use unless you're a numerical sevant, or even if I suppose. My username is forusword. My computer literacy level is minimal although I'm beginning to understand some of the beginning concepts. I had a previous post in the LFS forums, and where I realize that it takes time to contually answer user questions, I think I upset the person asking because of the RTFM "ritual". I'm more into psychology myself and my main interest in computers is actually in electronics which I've had some arses tell me in my life well those are different fields. I say no more than two blades of grass are not identical which does make sense (I don't mean to sound pompous). Electronics it seems are in increasing use in the field of psychology and I thought that the Free Software initiative and GNU Licensed public would not only provide some insight into the workings of electronics but I might even find a person who is interested in the information for the same purposes (not to sound like I'm posting to Match.com). So therein is a brief introduction to who I am, and why I am posting on Linuxquestions.org. |

Welcome to LQ! Since you admit to being a new user to GNU/Linux the idea to discuss building your own distribution is pompous. Then add to that this type of post about experiences in another forum complaining about your experience will get you nothing but negative impact. Baby steps! Even the LFS task is not something for a newbie to jump into anew. I think that the frustration with your post is the lack of a clear question. What did you want to know? As for "RTFM", people throw that around when they feel that your questions could have been easily solved by reading the already available information.
Projects like LFS and building your own distro are good ideas and don't hurt to try even if you are new, but don't be surprised when people don't answer your questions. It's like walking into an auto parts store and saying "I'd like to invent my own car. What is an alternator?" You really need a bit more experience before you are at that level. If you fail, put it down and come back later. Don't get rid of Windows until you are comfortable with Linux, just dual-boot. Get familiar with the command line, particularly with the "man" command. You probably don't need to build your own distro. Linux is surprisingly customizable. Start with a distro that you like and learn to tweak it. Consider this mandatory reading: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html When you think that you are competent, make a new partition and install Arch Linux. Follow the wiki. If you don't understand that, go back to your distro of choice and play around some more and do more googling. You'll be surprised how quickly you'll learn and you'll never hear "RTFM" again. Hello forusword and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,
In my opinion the Linux community and as such LinuxQuestions is all about helping out other Linux users whether they have any experience or not. I've read through your post twice and with all due respect I cannot find any question in it. If it was just meant as an introduction (which I think it was), then it's not helping you if you start out by mentioning bad experiences you had with other forums. Keep your mind open and you'll find LinuxQuestions one of the greatest forums around. Looking forward to your questions and trying to answer them. Kind regards, Eric |
