Introduction - Linux Newbie

My name is Andrija (aka Andy) and I retired from IT consulting in 1999. (Made a ton of money in the market bubble) But now things are getting lean and its time for me to catch up with all the new tech stuff I missed in the past 7 years.
I worked with the Multi-Value Database (aka Pick OS/DB) and have all my old applications that need a face-lift (GUI) and move into Open Source. I have a copy of the D3 Multi-Value Database still in the box that needs Linux installed.

So, that's why I'm here. I've been told that Linux now has a GUI front end and there are a lot of open-source desktop apps available.

My background goes back to IBM Unit Record Equipment and the first computer I used was a IBM 1401, in the early 60's. Then on to 360, 370 Sys/3 COBOL, RPG, Assmebler, Fortran. Worked with the old style client/server mainframe systems. Introduced to the MultiValue Database (Pick OS/DB) in early 80's and fell in love. Stayed in the MultiValue arena until I retired. I was able to avoid learning Unix AX etc until now. From what I've been told its a fun OS to work with. I'm looking forward to learning Linux

You're absolutely right. There are tons of desktop apps available for linux nowdays. Just decide which one of them (or more) you wanna use. GNU/Linux developed much in the past years. We hope you will like the world of GNU/linux. Happy Linuxing!
