Introduction

Hello folks...

I've previously only visited this site via Google hits on various Linux how-to queries, and found myself coming here enough that I decided it was time to register. :)

I've known about Linux since 1993 or 1994, and have been using it in some way or another since 1997 (when I set up ridiculously insecure Apache and sendmail hosts for a tiny company I used to work for). I've only been using it as my primary OS since September 2003. Despite the semi-regular exposure over the years, I still regard my skill level as being somewhere just slightly north of newbie.

I use Debian, because when I encountered Knoppix early last year, it blew me away and I soon used the knx-hdinstall tool to put it in a partition on my Windows machine. I've since stripped most of the Knoppix widgets and branding out of my install, so I guess that makes it a Debian box.

And it's a Debian box that has a lot of tiny little annoying things wrong with it. I'm sure most of these problems are solveable, but my time is limited...I raise my baby daughter during the day, I go to college at night and in between I do a bit of light remote sysadmin work for my former employer, so I don't have as much time as I'd like to get under the hood of my machine and straighten things out. Last week I got so frustrated that I almost went out and bought a copy of XP...but I pulled back from the brink. :)

Looking forward to leveraging the knowledge of this community and finally becoming a "real" Linux user (whatever that might mean).

-Dave

I've been to the MEPIS site but didn't "get" what it did that Knoppix didn't. What are some of the ways that it's more suitable for a HD install?
