Introducing Myself
I have been a faculty member at the Univeristy of the Pacific in Stockton, California since 1974. We began a Computer Science concentration in the Mathematics Department around 1978 with a PDP 11/34 as our only machine. We ran UNIX with 10+ terminals on that guy with an 80 megabyte disk!
After becoming a separate department in 1986, we moved to Windows, but I still kept in touch with UNIX and its derivatives. The operating systems are so much more complex now.
I am currently involved in a project to make Linux available to our Computer Science majors in the classroom. I have installed openSUSE on a server running VMWare. Our students will access it using SSH on the command line, secure X11 forwarding using PuTTY, and Gnome with NX Client. The NX software is really quite amazing. I am hoping we are successful in giving our students a good Linux experience.
