mp3 isn't a problem at all in Fedora (as satinet seems to imply .. apologies beforehand if I misunderstood)

Actually, it depends on why you want to use linux. If you see it as a free (as in no payment needed) alternative to windows, you may be right (or you may not be). If you look at it as an Open Source sollution you may not even want to use mp3 since it's a poprietary format and using it without buying a licence (e.g. buying some licenced softwar package, or a piece of hardware that comes with such software) is illegal in many countries.
Even so, there is an easy way around all of this if the laws of your country do allow it (or you don't mind having illegal software on your box) as outlined on the sites I linked to.
