Intro

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to Linux. I started messing with it this past summer with SUSE 9.3. Since then I have tried Fedora Core 3 & 4, Ubuntu, Xandros, and most recently SUSE 10.0 Open Source (installed on my system now). At first, I was really lost. The learning curve is steep at first. But, over time I have gained some valuable knowledge.

I am fed up with Windows. I use Windows mostly as a music recording platform (Sonar 4 PE with a Yamaha 01x) but I also go on the internet and play games. Unfortunately, windows becomes cluttered very easily and I start having problems with my audio setup. So, I am trying to make the switch over to Linux as my primary desktop and use a non internet connected Win XP (until Linux gets rock solid support for the 01x interface) strictly for music production.

For the longest time I couldn't get 3d support with my Radeon 9700 pro with any distro. Which kind of turned me off to linux for a while. That all changed yesterday... I FINALLY was able to get it working. Thanks to the new drivers released by ATI last week. So now I am excited again about linux!!!

I hope I can get some of my other smaller questions answered here on these forums.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, and welcome to LQ.

If you are interested in music production you may want to have a look at ardour:
http://www.ardour.org/

http://linux-sound.org/ also has links to hundreds of audio related resources for Linux.

Have fun!

Thanks bulliver and linmix!! There is a lot of info in those links!! If only Yamaha would develop drivers for the 01x interface I would be in heaven...
