I have been an enthusiastic Ubuntu user since April of 2007 starting with Gutsy, then Hardy and now a clean install of Intrepid Ibis. I have struggled hard to make wireless work - everything else has either worked out of the box or been an easy fix. My problems with wireless have been mostly because of my ignorance of wireless protocol and terms. After installing Intrepid it recognized my wireless card an suggested a driver. When I installed the driver Ubuntu took over and completed my wireless installation without effort on my part.
I have a year old Acer desktop and a 5 month old Thinkpad, both of which use XP. By choice I use Ubuntu on an old Dell laptop almost exclusively.
This is my first post on LQ. I have always felt a bit intimaedated by this forum, but have enjoyed browsing it. I owe a particular debt to those whose posts have contained instructions that I could copy and paste in the terminal. They have saved me much grief due to miss-typing. It is easy for a neophyte to confuse "1" and "l" or misuse caps.
My success with Intrepid and wireless is probably due, for the most part, to the person who recommended a clean install as the first step in achieving wireless.
I'm interested in learning how other Ubuntu users have found like souls in their area. I'd be excited about a user's group. KEngleka
