I like advanced functionality -- so, Hello!

Currently using Ubuntu 8.10. Tried it several months ago on an older PC but it was way too slow. Now trying it on a P4 Celeron with 845G integrated video. Have to use VESA drivers to make it run. Looking for the right Distro or coding to gain "advanced functionality". Hoping to find the answer poking around LQ.
