Human Form of Spam

I'm a more or less regular reader of Linuxquestions, when googling stuff it seems spretty clear that this place contains a vast amount of knowledge. Now I'm registering not to post question, but for the selfish purposes of getting myself unbored and getting another bunch of signature links that will improve my home page's visibility on google. How sad.

Anyways, hope I'll think of something to ask here instead of constantly bugging friends at irc. I've used Linux systems for almost a year and a half. I started with Suse 9.1 Personal, which was a pain in the ass, moved to newer versions and then tried Slackware, but felt kind of lazy so I tried Debian, but the five year old software issue made me switch to Debian testing. On my server, that is. I wouldn't stand a day without a server collecting uptime, serving files to the rest of the family with ftp, samba and nfs, endless irc'ing (scrren + irssi) and keeping up the appearances with a placeholder homepage. Not to mention how smoothly rtorrent integrates with my file serving and music storage needs.

Desktop-wise I'm still Windows, although I have a Gentoo dualboot, which is kewl, but far too time consuming to play around with. I really just want a quick and dirty desktop with all the tools for handling media I could possibly imagine; Windows feels more and more stupid every day but Ubuntu isn't just my thing (although nice to set up and maintain for ther people), and besides I like keeping that Gentoo install (which I didn't do myself) just as a no-life status symbol of sorts. ;)

And did I mention that I hate Gnome?

Now stop reading this and forget that this mindless ranting made you sad. Complaining about computer software is a way of life, which I am here to celebrate.

Welcome! It's interesting that you have never posted a question. Just all answers are there?

this place doesn't necessarily have all the answers ;), but what i meant is that LQ very often is on the google results page, at least when it's about "complicated easy" questions that you'd think people find irrtating to answer time after time. What is great about having a being beginner-friendly forum is also that lots of people want answers, but ask them in the wrong way. Here you often find very good ansvers for "senseless" questions.

Welcome to LQ! For what it's worth: if you didn't like Ubuntu because of Gnome, it may interest you to know that there is Kubuntu, which is a KDE based version of Ubuntu. I think you probably already knew that, but just in case ;)

Thanks. And yeah, people usually don't know about Kubuntu but all the Ubuntu desktops I set up for people have the 'kubuntu-desktop'-package installed as well, along with other must have tools as automatix etc. The Kubuntu desktop isn't sadly as polished as it's gnome counterpart in ubuntu. But usually the computers I install Ubuntu on are not really suited for running KDE, while Gnome 2.14 and newer are incredibly fast, but having the kubuntued versions of Konqueror and amarok among other things is wonderful in the oversimplified moronic unfunctional desert that gnome is.

It is really great to join LQ

Hello, everyone I am from Ethiopia where there is 100 percent dominance of commercial products[ of MS Windows]. FOSS is rarely mentioned let alone used here in Ethiopia. I'm working in a computer science college as LINUX admin and instructor of UNIX using linux. I hope I would be benefited a lot from you to serve others.

I would gladly accept any material ..

Thanks. The most important rule about sigs is: don't try to be funny, use Monty Python instead ;)

Hello again, I would really like to express my appreciation to LQ members. I found LQ the most helpful resource available on the net. I think you can help me with these too.
Q1-I encountered a problem while installing ubuntu 6.06 and red hat 9. Do they really work together in a single machine.

Q2-I'm planning to take LPI certification soon, is there anybody who can help by providing sample practice exams? Thank you!
