I've been shown a little Debian by a tutor, but just recently downloaded and installed Mandrake 10.2 LE. Been working on it, updating drivers, modifying xorg.conf files and others.

Looks like I screwed it up my Linux box completely already. :(

All I've done is install Linux nVidia drivers for my card. Followed the instructions word-for-word. Worked fine seemingly. Installed nForce drivers. Seemed to work fine too. But I played with something, and now I can't start Xserver because there is a problem with the font server.

Tried everything I can think of. Made sure xfs service is on: I set chksomething -- add 0123456 xfs on but the monitor goes out of range blank screen. Starting from console gives me an error and tells me to check a log. It says something about the font server.

Anyway. I'm gonna go start again lol :(

Well, first of all welcome to LQ from me too.

Good to see you playing aroung with things. And I give you credit for that. Since you are starting again I wouldn't trouble you asking more details, but here are some things.

The command you use was "chkconfig". It will help you to manage SysV init sctripts (don't worry, SysV init a system to manage your system initialization). And you don't need xfs on all run levels (especially on 0 and 6 which would be shutdown and reboot, and most probably not in 1 which is the single user mode). You need it only on runlevels where you need the GUI.

What I learnt from my experience is that logs are there for the purpose they are intended for - tracability. They'll help you a lot to do troubleshooting. Get use to scanning them, it'll help.

Hi, yeah, it was that command. I was just seeing if that would possibly fix my situation. I'm familiar with the console concept, since I started outwith computers with Win 3.1 and onwards, so I was happy to use the console to work through.

Anyway, I'm gonna stick with Linux because I'm not so sure about Vista and hope in the future it is more widespread. Eventually, I'd like to migrate our Windows 2003 Server over to Linux, but that's gonna be a while off yet ;)
