I'm Rachael. I am an Oracle SQL Developer, report writer, and java programmer living in California. I've switched over to linux recently because it is easier to work with my code files, which are mostly all text files. I first started using Red Hat Linux in 1997, so I do have quite a bit of experience with Linux, but I still come across frustrating questions now and then. I'm have a lot to learn on the networking side of things, so that makes it difficult to run my server. I'm running a Fedora 25 Server for SVN and using Ubuntu on my laptop currently. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and start chatting with you here at LQ.
I'm Richard. I live far south and to the east of you, in the Caribbean. Just winding down from a long programming session today. Since 10am, it's now 11pm. Long day, I'm starting to make stupid mistakes.
Oracle, huh. Never had to work with Oracle, but I've done Informix, MS SQL Server, Mysql, Postgresql. I used to be a C programmer back in the day, but I've drifted all over and today I find myself fiddling with Python code, which I'm not very good at.
Right now, I'm trying to get a screen working in a framework called Odoo, which is from Belgium. A bit of a challenge coz my Python skills are so bad.
When I look at my git logs, I've been working on this thing for 2 years now and I still really don't understand it yet.
So, Red Hat? I used Red Hat in the beginning but I moved to Slackware sometime in the late 90's and it's my main desktop now. I do use a CentOS based server, called SME Server.
Networking takes time. It's not as bad as programming but it takes time. The best thing I can tell you is to set up some virtual machines, probably under VirtualBox and play around with them. You can learn a lot that way.
Also, if you can get your hands on some Raspberry Pi's, they're very useful and cheap to play around with. I have one in the office working as a X-window terminal running off x11vnc from another user's desktop PC. Hey, only US$50 for a terminal. Much cheaper than what it used to be.
Man, I'm making mistakes now. Just one good compile and I'm done for the night. Just one, that's all I want.
