Thumbs up Hi from another newbie

Hi,

I'm Dave and I live in Scotland. I'm an old-time PC user (PrimeOS in college then Commodore Pet, C/PM, M/PM, DOS and Windows) now testing the waters in Linux-land.

I started with Linux in order to put some life back into an ancient (10+ years old) Windows XP laptop and after experimenting with loads of distros decided on Precise Puppy Linux, which is just brilliant.

This old laptop now flies like the wind!

Hi...

Welcome to the forum

Ah, yes, I remember the PETs from my elementary school days. Insert a cassette tape with the program you want to use into the player (that's connected to the computer,) wait 10 to 15 minutes and off you go! That is, if a glitch didn't make you rewind the tape and start all over again.

Regards...

Ha ha, you may be a youngster, but you've a great memory! Spot on!

However they were revolutionary at the time. The Apple ][ was seen as more of a hobbyist's toy, whereas the Pets were the first affordable computing device for small businesses, and they were brilliant.

I built and sold shed loads of stock control and financial reporting apps for it and, being just a little bit geeky, even planned my wedding on it!

Good memories!

Welcome aboard Dave!

I never had a Commodore instead we had the TRS-80, but we had the cassette recorder too. And having been involved with the service and doing communications, I've operated teletype and dealt with paper tape as well as punchcards. Good times!

Thank you but praise be to God, one of the many blessings He's given me. I remember once in 1990, I drove down to California to visit some family members I have there and I was able to find my Aunt and Uncle's house from landmarks (different objects I saw along the way) I remembered when I had visted there as a young child, over a 10 year span of time.

What program did you use to plan your wedding, out of curiosity?

Regards...

Thanks for the warm welcome, rtmistler. I'd forgotten about Tandy, they made some brilliant kit.

Ha ha, I'm sorry ardvark71, I've no idea now which programs I used (it was 35 years ago)! I remember I made one to forecast the numbers of invited guests who would actually attend. Like modern airline booking systems, we knew lots of (particularly my parents') friends, who had to receive an invitation, would not turn up, whether due to age, infirmity or distance to travel; and so I could safely invite more of my friends! Surprisingly - given the crude algorithm I used - it predicted the final numbers for the reception to within one or two. I think it was more likely just good luck! I also put together a very simple project management system to coordinate everything on the day, but which was far too clunky to be useful so I just ended up writing notes in a text editor!

Wow, you wrote them, I was thinking a commercial, store bought program.

Regards...
