Hello,

I am a C++/Python guy who is doing an Oracle project on a Linux box. I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES Release 4 (Nahant Update 4).

A few minutes ago, I tried to make my first post but the post was rejected with the message:

"You cannot post URLs to other sites until you have made at least 1 other post. Why not introduce yourself in the Member Intro forum?"

And that's how I ended up here with you fine folks. Greetings.

Though it probably does not matter for you, it is quite simple to post a first post and then edit it to include a URL. I have not seen any additional comments reporting its usefulness, but I suppose it is possible others have looked at it and it has been helpful.

Once you have posted a thread to complain about not being able to post a clickable link, the problem is moot. There are two ways around it - the first os to prove you are a human being and not a bot by posting something like a hello, the second is to use all your l33t hax0r knowledge and post a non-clickable link h tt://www.example.com for example.

With the traffic we receive, allowing spambots an easy ride would mean that this forum would become unusable in very little time. We're trading a small bit of convenience to allow usability. Fair trade off?

Was this just general information, a response to (a perceived complaint from) the OP, or myself?

At the time, I thought it was dumb, but it wasn't significantly worse than having to register in the first place. If it does help, than it does have a good justification. On that topic - Did adding the "no urls in the FP" rule help much?

Between the no url rule and having spam catchers in the background we get very very few spams. All our spam tends to be from human beings rather than bots and gets caught in minutes - the "many eyes making all bugs shallow" thing in action! We've all seen promising sites sink under the wealth of spam that hits anywhere they can and we really really don't want that to happen to LQ.

And it was a response mainly to the OP, but also as part of my education drive for anyone who complains. It's that or I have to come round your house. And no one wants that :)

Out of sight out of mind - I had not really given much thought to the lack of spam, but now that I consider it, the lack of spam on LQ is impressive. Its great to have helpful mods with positive attitudes.
