Hello world

I've just recently been handed the responsibility of managing a web server. It's running FC3, and a number of the daemons need to be upgraded. I would suspect that there are a few packages that could be removed, too.

I've never managed a live server (let alone a Linux webserver), so I'm a little weary about doing most anything.

Hi and welcome to LinuxQuestions

Do you have a workstation (not too old) lying around that you can install FC3 on as well? Learning about upgrading/installing software on a production box is a recipe for grey hair. At the very least, take a full backup of the server before making major changes to it - and write down every change you make.

Oh, and ask lots of questions here too...

I do happen to have a workstation available for that role. It's actually an IBM server (don't know the series or model offhand). I've been thinking about installing FC3 with all the same packages as are on the production machine, and then rsyncing to get the exact same environment... and using the local machine as a testing server.

In what forums would I post questions about setting up a testing server like that?

For stuff specific to Fedora, there's a forum here at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...splay.php?f=35. For software specific stuff, there's http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...isplay.php?f=2 (and it's sub-forums) and for hardware stuff, there's http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...splay.php?f=18.

Have a look at the Linux forums list here at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...splay.php?f=50 - there are also security and networking forums, as well as others.
