I'm from Neenah, WI. I start working on Nix systems on Solaris back around 96, when I started a dial up ISP. I sold the company and moved on in mid 2002. I think I still have a SPARC system sitting in my basement somewhere, one of these days I'll dig it out and boot it up.
I've used various other systems on various web hosts, but have not maintained full systems, other than Solaris. I am guessing most of these systems I've used were either RL or CentOS, but I never checked and can't say for sure. I've pretty much gotten used to the linux commands, though I still type Solaris commands once in a while. ps -ef eeerr no ps aux.
So, for the first time, I'm considering using linux for my desktop. Last time I looked into a number of years ago, there just wasn't the compatibility for a number of pieces of hardware, and I didn't want the hassle. I'm highly suspecting that has changed now.
I'm not in the Internet / Web hosting business anymore, as I mentioned, left in 2002, but have been considering a few projects that might get me involved again, at least a little bit. Would be fun to administer some systems again.
You are right about the changes, there have been a lot of changes in the past eight years as far a hw compatibility goes. There are still a few problems but not as many as used to be and also a lot more tutorials out there for the 'fixes' and 'work arounds' including this site.
