Welcome from Texas! Can't recall when I first joined here, was a few years ago. Bounce back and forth between Linux distros and FreeBSD. I never use Windows except at work where I have no choice. At home it's Linux only and I have a MacBook Pro as well for traveling. I have owned Windows licenses before but never again.
Distro-hopping has been my bane: been hopping around for 20 years and can't settle. Currently on a "no systemd" kick and happy with Void Linux. Debian is actually one of my favorite distros. Pure Debian though, none of the offshoots.
Gamer here as well but only on Linux and my PS4, which happily, I found out actually runs a version of FreeBSD.
Hello nO1k and welcome to the forum from Missouri.
I use Linux Mint 19.1, Tessa, and Ubuntu 18.04, Bionic Beaver, and consider both of them fine for my needs.
Glad to know that you even though you roamed through the LQ forum for years you finally made the decision to join up We are looking forward to your participation.

That's a bit like me, except; when I first joined up to this forum, I only intended to ask maybe a few questions and that was it, and didn't participate for years after originally joining up. It was only some years later that I thought "well, I do know a lot more about Linux and how to do stuff with it, so perhaps I could return the favor and help out". So I did, although my interest in this forum has started to wane lately - but that's another story
Welcome!

I noticed you've said "Linux 19.1" quite a lot - there is no "Linux 19.1". Do you mean "Linux Mint 19.1" ?
I think what's fascinating about Linux (or shall I say UNIX?) is how it's everywhere yet not visibly known.
I recall one time walking through Ikea and being in the kitchen section. One of those 'DYI design kiosks' had a message up on the screen so I approached it to read. To my surprise, it was a RedHat message displayed but I can't recall what it related to. Really interesting.
I'm 34 currently and I recall having interest in Redhat/ubuntu and Linux back in around 2001-2005. I only wish I pursued my interest at that time but resources and references were nothing like they are today.
Not Unix! Linux is "sort of" related but nothing like Unix. Unix is really a trademark, AT&T I think but others may correct me. The BSDs are more like Unix because they are direct decendents (sp).
I started this crazy ride in 1998 when I grew disgusted with Windows. Actually, I was disgusted with it in 1993 when I first saw it but that is another matter...been using Linux (or BSD) ever since and although there have been trials and tribulations, I have learned a lot, and especially learned that there is much more to learn

Unlike gum, I can't ever get the clarity to stick haha! Over the past few years I've must have searched "linux vs Unix" etc on google to understand the true difference and correct way of identifying but always forget. But I blame that on my forgetfulness. I'm slowly starting to understand the basic differences between a debian based distro vs RPM based.
So Linux is "Unix-like" but it is different. Yeah, Debian based distros use the Debian package management format and RPM use the RPM based package management format. There are other differences but most Linuces are the same, just different package managers and default desktops or window managers. Some vary way outside and do things differently, like source based, or using an entirely different init system.

You're alright greencedar, just wasn't sure if you realized it or not. Plus for those that don't know, then it could be confusing (since Linux itself is just the kernel - you won't get very far with just the kernel by itself ), that's all.

Not quite correct. Linux is not UNIX but it is Unix. UNIX was the original AT&T system and that name is trademarked. But Unix is often used as a sort of general name for UNIX-like systems.
Just stopping by to say hello!
Been using Windows for years. Started with DOS 6.22.
With Windows 10, I decided I need to use something that doesn't report my every action and suck the life out of my laptop.
Using Ubuntu with KDE desktop.
I have some basic knowledge of Linux and Unix but am far from an expert.
Hoping to learn here.
