Hello! from a Linux Noob

Hello all!

I'm a 30 yr old wife and mom of two wonderful sons. We're currently in the process of moving into a new townhouse in Great Mills, MD after Christmas. Once we get things squared away I plan on slapping Linux in some form on my computer.

Vital comp stats:
AMD Athlon 2600+
512 MB RAM
80GB HD
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500

Yeah I know, not much, but it's done me and the kids well for the past two years. Right now I've got WinXP on it. Haven't quite decided which distro to go with yet. I can do some basic command lines (I know my way around DOS fairly well and did some BASIC programming in HS) but Linux is a whole new beast to me.

Anyways, I'm hoping to learn a lot and help out as much as possible!

Welcome!!
You are starting off with a good attitude. And that computer is no slouch--Linux will be very happy there.
The folklore that i have followed says that DOS was based on Unix, so you are already off to a good start.

Check in on the Newbie forum with you first question, but--PLEASE--not "What distro should I get". Go to Distrowatch.com and then come back here and tell us what you picked.

LOL yeah I've peeked in on the 'what distro should I get' threads already. Yikes. I'll be gettting my computer set up hopefully by the end of next week, till then I'll be reading up a bit.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hi and welcome to LQ Just remember that Linux (while having similarities to Windows) is a whole new beastie and you should be ok - most of the problems will come from new users expecting it to be the same and getting very very frustrated.

Just remember, if you get stuck post up a thread here (in the correct forum ) and we're happy to help.

Good luck with both your moves!
