Greetings from Switzerland

Hi all

Being a systems engineer since 21 years now... switched over from chemistry to IT as a freelancer. Since almost 11 years as a capacity of a IT officer/manager in a small medical diagnostics/research institute.

We have a diagnostics departments offering a wide range of diagnostic tests for clinically relevant human viruses. And a research department looking for solutions for human pathogenic viruses, viral pathogenesis, new antiviral therapies, molecular diagnostics and clinical virology.

As the only IT guy I’m responsible for operation & support of the 80 employees, students , PhDs and professors as well of evaluation & procurement of the hard- and software.
We have about 130 PC’s most of them with Windows 7/10, about 20 Macs and a few Linux machines. As well 15 servers, most of them with Windows 2012 r2 and the rest with Linux.

I’m not a Linux guy not at all. In my youth I tried and used SuSE Linux but eventually switched over to windows. From about 1998 I switched to the Mac and back to Unix kind of with the introduction of macOS X. Since then I switch personally between windows and macOS - with some occasional trips to Linux.

At a professional capacity I’m responsible to keep the backup with IBM Tivoli running at those Ubuntu and CentOS servers. This goes well more or less....

Just a few weeks ago I get a assignment to build a Linux workstation, with focus on CPU and CUDA cores. So we end up with a custom build Threadripper with RTX graphics. To get this running on its own M.2 and Windows 10 running on a separate M.2 I’m here looking for some inspiration...

Cheers!
