good morning.
hi introduce my self here... OK.
i found this forum when i was googling for a way to solve a problem i am having installing Debian on a 486 i was gonna use as a firewall but foundout it doesnt support USB since the ADSL modem i have is USB i found myself with a useless box so i decided to experiment with a different linux than fedora and mandrake. anyhow im an insomniac forum monkey that got stuck here. ;]-~ have fun people ben. |

Have you taken a peek at specific firewalling distros, like Smoothwall or IPCop? I think they support many USB devices... even the Frog, perhaps?

Welcome to linux.. I hope you find a good distro do do what you want..

I have a westell DSL modem that I will never use, that I might be able to sale.. let me talk to my dad, since he was the one that gave it to me.. its in its box, and comes with some of its stuff.. email me if anyones interested...

dunno we are in two very different parts of the world, postage and exchange rates might make the whole thing pointless althought the american dollar sucks at the moment. how much would you think of selling it for?
|
Maybe you could talk to the local Library or a school and see if they have any old beasts lying around you could have. I have actually gone to the point of driving up and down the road and calling businesses that I pass that look privately owned. Last time I came home with six machines, one with a 19" Princeton Graphics monitor, within an hour or so. One guy tried to give me a pile of old WISE terminals. :) Anyway thats how I get my old equipment free. Just come up with a good excuse why you need it; school project, cracking:)practice, global takeover,etc.... whatever. You would be surprised how many companies have treasures just sitting on a shelf in the back cause they don't want to through away working stuff.

yeah true iv leeched some stuff from uni;
a 12 port hub, 17" moniter, some random NCD Terminal, a couple of cases, some ram, a mother board. and i got the computer i was gonna use as my firewall (an old 486 with a couple of network cards, 15gig HD, soundblaseter) and another hub + some ethernet cables from a friend who builds computers for a health care company. I know a bit about reaping the benefits (since iv been able to find some use for pretty much any computer no matter how old) but im always keen to learn more ill give some companys a call see what i can get, thanks for the idea. |
