First time linux user looking for any pointers.

I have made a big change from XP centOS and FreeBSD. Currently I am using centOS 4 on my laptop and FreeBSD on my Desktop.
I frustration lies mostly with downloads and installs.

The whole process is blowing my mind right now. I am sure it is easier then I think, but I am trying to learn by reading on the web, and forums. If there is any links to downloading and installing step by step that would be a great help.

Well, there are many different methods, depending on the app and distribution. You're best bet is to ask about installing specific apps or distributions. See what you can do with whatever you're trying to install and then ask for clarification about that specifically.
