Finally a convert (partly)
Hello all, though I'm relatively new to Linux (dabbled with Red Hat six or seven years ago, FreeBSD for a little while years ago, Debian last summer), I think I found a Linux distribution I like: ubuntu.
I am a computer professional specialising in, yes, Windows. A love/hate relationship since I started in 1986 (as a pro) and 1980 (Commodore, Amiga, then DOS). Microsoft made me a fair amount of money until about 2000. I semi-retired and now run my farm.
My current project is working on finding the most efficient crop for the production of ethanol, which is proving to be interesting because I live in a area known for the production of sugar beets. So far my tests show a huge positive differential over most grains, especially corn. Only last year did I replace a field with switchgrass, so that effort won't fully culminate for about three years. I will get some crop next year, however.
I am currently looking for the perfect enzymes, so if one of you is an organic chemist or a distiller, drop me a line. For that matter, if you have any ideas, please let me know.
For the first time in years I feel we may be able to finally return to a producer ethic in this country, and this time I can do more than just make a living. While I have degrees in geology and history from centuries ago, I spent many years working on a lucrative hobby of a job; I loved cars. From 1974 to 1986 I worked on building engines and standard transmissions specifically. For ethanol to work well, either as E-85, or E-97 (Brazil), an ethanol internal combustion engine must have about a 13:1 compression ratio; most gasoline vehicles are about 9:1. I have already built an engine, however it is carbureted. I am also not an expert in fuel injection programming, so if anyone has that experience, please contact me.
Thanks,
Ken
