Canadian Noobie EH

I'm from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I work in the IT Dept. of a mostly Windows based comapny. So I know Windows and over a decade ago bought my first Mac. So I'm proficient in both OSes. I got a spare machine and after seeing a tutorial on getting started in Linux thought what the hell I'd love to learn Linux. I'm 2 weeks in and still not understanding anything, commands don't work like they are supposed in the threads I'm finding. I'm not discouraged though it just makes things more fun. I'm currently running Mint Linux and my new challenge is getting my Linksys USB Wifi card to work.

half my family is on the OTHER side of the river from Detroit
( i live in Mich. they are in Windsor area )

What operating system are you using ?

for example if it is RHEL and you did not buy the required support contract
THINGS will NOT work right

also what is the hardware ?
if it is a near antique Pentium 4 or older 3 -- there will also be problems

you will also have issues if the Hardware is VERY VERY NEW and you install a older legacy support OS on it like RHEL 5.11

I should be pretty good in terms of the hardware and software then. I've got Linux Mint 17.2 and the system is an Intel Xeon with 16GB and a Quadra videocard. It's not new but it's not ancient either. Windsor is prett far from me I live near Toronto out in Burlington. I'm surprised there aren't other Canadians that I've seen yet but sure I'll run into some eventually.
