Beginner's intro and complete newbie to linux

Greetings,
Really want to learn linux. I have an old xp to work on, but it cannot read all the files necessary to install linux off cd or flash drive. I can't even reformat the hard drive cause I have no windows cd. Is this a dead end or is there any hope here? Anyway, looking forward to picking brains and learning something new. Thanks...

Dave

An old xp what. Read the minimum hardware requirements for the flavor that you are trying to install. You'll no doubt need 256M of RAM for an install with many of them.
Some like Arch require a PII or better processor.

Why? Too little RAM, too little HD or what? What error are you getting with what flavor of Linux?
