Back to Linux

Hi there. I ran Linux for 5 years back in the Win95 days, but went back to Windows when they obsoleted that POS.

Now I'm fed up with bloated and slow Windows again, so I decided to come back. I remember having a good time on it. Everything was 100x more reliable. Back then I started with RedHat, then ended up on Slackware, though tried others, still fell back on Slackware. Used to do a lot of programming back then too.

Now, I'm running Debian. Liking it so far, but have some questions that man pages don't answer.

Welcome - yes, Windows is almost intolerable now. I could tolerate Windows 7, but my work laptop has Windows 10 on it and I find it horrible to use. I actually leave it switched off and use my Linux desktop machine as I work from home.

I know I had a lot of stuff on my PC, but Windows 10 was taking 5-10 minutes to complete booting and return control to me. Yeah, very intolerable.

I've dumped Debian. I was seeing apps causing my system to freeze and leaving artifacts behind.

I got my Slackware back. It took a day, learning to use my router and USB stick as network storage, but I'm back up and running.

Well if it helps, I have found that Xubuntu tends to get any kind of system to a good level and quick. My previous machine was 5 seconds power to desktop. Now with Ubuntu it is about 20-30 seconds, but I can live with that. There is always a flavor of Linux that works for anyone. Windows is going to shrink as a desktop, but continue as a server.
