LinuxQuestions.org - Another Newbie with more questions about the fundamentals!

I'm Valo, I live in San Diego and I have just realized what time it is and that I forgot to sleep last night, again, because I'm trying to install Slackware 10.1 on an old relic of a computer, IBM PS/ValuePoint 425sx/d. Concurrently, I'm working through an install of Slackware 7 on an NEC Versa 2430CD, a throwaway from the weather community within the Marine Corps.

The IBM used to run win98, I wanted to see if the xp upgrade disk really did the job since my better half bought a copy for us both. Well, it did. The old dinosaur had been upgraded to 64mb ram and had a harddrive installed of 2.5g and handled xp in a so-so way. Well, that told me that since Linux requirements were so comparatively low that this machine was not ready for the scrapheap just yet. However, I have only had success in installing Slackware 3.1, which is just so outdated compared to current releases that I wanted to move up to 10.1 or at least 7. Neither of them are working so far and I'm nearly at the end of my own resourcefulness and with what's available online from what others have asked. The bare.1 bootdisks have proven ineffective as well as a host of other boot disks. I've not reached Kernel compiling status yet, not even close, but I know that someone out there knows how to draw the line between old Micro-Architecture, and upgrades to an IDE system with improved ram and hard drive space, I recently installed a 20g hard drive. In short- I need a boot disk for this SOB!

On to the Versa. It's old (circa 1994ish) but it too has been upgraded. 64ram, 4g hard drive 133mghz Pentium II. After I installed Slack 7, Lilo brings me this reel of badness /etc/rc.d/rc.M: cat: command not found

From here, I can create new users and issue some commands, but as you can see from above, there's alot missing. I don't know what went wrong, but if anyone can tell me at least how to get cat up and running, that would be a start.
