LinuxQuestions.org - American Linux veteran in Asia

Hello, all. My name is Jeff Dickey, and I've been a Unix developer since 1979, using and developing for Linux since nearly the dawn of the epoch (roughly 1994). I presently have three Linux boxes running Kanotix Easter Preview RC4, OpenSuSE 10.1 and SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2 (which is a legacy system at this point, as the in-beta "6.0" release is based on Ubuntu rather than Debian). I started on Slackware when boxes, if not trays of floppies were the order of the day, moving to Red Hat and then onwards. For the last two years or so I have been a Debian evangelist simply because I have yet to see a better package-management and -update system on any distribution. I still have one depressingly Windows-only PC, which gets rebuilt more often than many Linux boxes I work with get rebooted. And I still have my trusty Power Computing PowerTower Pro Mac clone running Macintosh OS 9.2.

I do Web development and software development in Python, PHP, C++, C and Eiffel, and maintain software written in FORTRAN and GNU Ada.

I have been consulting for several years to small and midsize businesses looking to improve productivity, lower costs and gain more internal control over their business processes by migrating away from Microsoft operating systems and office applications to more appropriate, sustainable open systems, especially Linux.

I am an American who has been living in Asia for the last several years. I'm presently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and expect to move to Beijing, China this summer.

I am very open to new projects and clients; if you are interested or know of someone who might be, please let me know.

As a parting shot...it seems a little inconsistent to me to have the "welcome to the site" message encourage you to post in this forum straightaway, but the system prevents people from posting links to the things you're talking about; when I initially composed this note, I had about 15 links - which might be helpful to some of the newbies on board. Oh well - nearly everybody knows Google. :-P
