am i able to access root?
 

I'm new to linux and just installed mandrake 10.1 on my machine. I'm hoping to set it up as a server and i'm told i will need root access. When i try to access the folder "root" it says access denied. I only created one user account on the machine and only ever used one password when ever it asks for one.

Any ideas on what i'm doing wrong?

Try the password again which you have already used; make sure that the keyboard's
Caps-Lock or Number lock keys are not altering your password

If you password is XyZ123, then xyz123 won't be recognized--passwords are "case-sensitive".


If that still doesn't solve the problem, ensure that you have not altered the keyboard's language set-up in which you installed your system software. Again, in the installation process, you were asked to designate the language format for the keyboard.


When you installed your Mandrake system, at some point in the process, you were asked to designate a password for what is called "root".

"Root" is the login (or, if you prefer, the "user name") name which enables access to the full range of your system's administration. For example, it's the "root" user which sets up other user's accounts or user names. Ordinarily, no other non-"root" authorized user can do this. "Root" also is the sole user able to issue certain sensitive and essential commands to be executed at the command-line prompt.
