How does the bandwidth performance of rdesktop compare to vnc? VNC gets laggy for me even over a wireless lan. I'm not sure if you can answer this, but it's something I've been trying to find for a while.

I've never seen any hard data on this (to be fair I have never looked) and I'm not much of a VNC user. Someone else may be able to share their experiences though.

I have used rdesktop to monitor and admin a Windows server. Admittedly, it was within an office and we had a quick network, but it seemed ok to me.

I use VNC to access a GUI on my Linux desktop from Windows machines at work/school, which is why I asked. Because, despite FTTH on one end, and OC3 on the other, it lags. Like crazy, sometimes.

If you tweak your display settings on the Vnc server and viewer you can reduce some of the lag enough to make remote admin not such a frustrating experience.
