WPA2 wireless won't connect with Netgear USB Wireless stick

I installed my external Netgear WG111v2 USB wireless card to my Desktop running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit using these commands:

sudo ndiswrapper -i netwg111.inf
[ndiswrapper -l outputs: netwg111 : driver installed]
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

iwconfig output:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID off/any
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management: off

Then I tried to connect to my WPA2 home network using the WiCD network manager. The manager finds my SSID and tries to connect, but eventually fails stating an authentication error. But I checked the password multiple times, and our Windows 7 laptop can connect using the same password. (WiCD connects using cable without problems).

Then I tried wpa_supplicant, config file as follows:

network={
ssid="FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN xxxx"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" (16 numbers)
}

(I assume the password won't need conversion into HEX, in any case I tried it but it complained that it exceeded 63 characters.)

Then I ran: sudo wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -d

OUTPUT is:

And that goes on and on.

Your HELP would be greatly appreciated. I had previously been able to use this Netgear with an older Ubuntu version on a different wireless system.

Hi,

Can you check lsusb and see if RTL8187 shows up? If so, then there is a native linux driver called rtl818x. Ndiswrapper should only be used as a dead last resort. It looks like you're using Ubuntu, so the driver for your card is probably already included. Try uninstalling ndiswrapper and wicd (unless you want it) and a reboot. Also, if you choose to remove wicd, then install networkmanager. If you still have trouble, then please post these commands:

lsmod
iwconfig
ifconfig

good luck,

Hi azenz

I have just been through the painful discovery of getting my wireless working (wpa2/aes), and I made a few notes on the last post here (looks like I put it in the wrong forum):

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...bility-907358/

maybe it will help .... if you can avoid the ndis.. the do so..

Cheers!

Hi rabbit2345,

Sorry for the delay, I was on holiday.

So I did that, since the RTL... showed up as you said.

Now, the network manager tries to connect for a while and then says that the password is bad (it prompts for the password again and again and again). But I can connect from my laptop using the same settings and password.
