Wireless works but no monitor mode, Altheros card

I have a Toshiba laptop with an Altheros G card built in, I run FC5 fully updated, madwifi 0.9.1 drivers.

I got the card to work if I type all the commands in the terminal, however when I try to use NetworkManager it will not connect, I don't mind this much but a fix would be nice.

Also I cannot get my card to enter monitor mode, it works fine in Auditor Security Collection but not in FC5, I get the error:

[root@anibis ~]# iwconfig ath0 mode monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device ath0 ; Invalid argument.

I tried specifying an ESSID and still the same.

Here is what happens when I try to run airodump-ng

[root@anibis aircrack-ng]# airodump-ng --ivs -w cap1 -c 9 ath0
ioctl(SIOCSIWMODE) failed: Invalid argument
Error setting monitor mode on ath0

Also Kismet will not work, I'm sure I just have a setting wrong in the config file but I cannot figure it out, here is the error I get:

[root@anibis wifi]# kismet

Client options: none

WARNING: ath0 appears to not accept the Madwifi-NG controls. Will attempt to configure it as a standard Madwifi-old interface. If you are using madwifi-ng, be sure to set the source interface to the wifiX control interface, NOT athX
FATAL: 'get_mode' does not return integer parameters.

Sorry for the multiple questions, thanks in advance.

I suspect that the MadWiFi fix (http://madwifi.org/changeset/1380) for this is not in the current MadWiFi livna package as the livna package is from January and the current MadWiFi release is from May

Are you using the linvna depot?

I found a linva bugzilla bug and it confirms that the livna MadWiFi is broken with NetworkManager.

Subcribe to this bug to find out when livna MadWiFi will work with NetworkManager.

ok thats no big deal, I just created some scripts for the wireless networks I use, now what about my wireless card not going into monitor mode?

I downloaded the files you listed in your first post, I copied them to the same dirs in the madwifi-0.9.1 dir, and recompiled. It listed the files when I ran make, and make install ran fine yet I still cannot get my card to go into monitor mode. Is there a different madwifi driver I can use?

Also I went into the patches dir and ran ./install.sh and everything ran fine.

I got Kismet working, when I load Kismet it creates a wireless device called 'kis', when I run airodump-ng using that interface it works fine, I just can't use ath0.

You don't do this with atheros cards and the madwifi-ng driver. You need to create a new interface from wifi0 (probably want to call it ath1). This will be the same physical card with a different mode:

Code:

# wlanconfig ath1 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode monitor
A benefit of this method is that you can use one card to do many things (i.e., access point, monitor mode, wds, all-in-one).

That did it, thanks alot.

I don’t know the specifics of how to get it in slackware, but wlanconfig can be found in the madwifi-ng source, which you can get from svn or in tarball form.
