Wireless starting to fail - update driver?
For two yrs now I've been using my wireless card (kernel 2.4.26, Libranet, orinoco_cs) and it has worked fine. Just recently it has stopped being able to find some public networks. It works fine in hotels and in Panara, but I've never got t-mobile at American Admirals Clubs to work, or AT&T Wireless at Barnes & Noble - in addition it fails at the occassionally coffee house. Is it possible that newer wireless routers are making my wireless card obsolete? Do I need to update the ornioco driver? Anyone else have these problems? (I'm in a coffee house right now using my wife's WindowsXP, which sees the network fine, but my Linux laptop doesn't show it at all. Everything is working fine on the laptop - I just went home and logged onto my wireless network at home.)

well, how old is your wireless card vs your wife's?
it is entirely possible that some networks are broadcasting in 802.11g only, as I think (might be wrong) it yields some small performance improvements
also, is your card compatible with 802.11g, or only 802.11b?

A very good point. My laptop is an Thinkpad T30 - not the newest thing on the block. (Circa 2002? - I bought it used) The card is a Prism 2.5, which I'm pretty sure doesn't do 802.11g. I will check to see what protocol t-mobile is using in admiral's clubs. My wife's laptop is < 1 year old, and so likely does b and g.

Prism 2.5 will not handle 802.11G - that much I can confirm. Last I knew, the Admirals Club used B and my Slackware/orinoco_cs setup worked fine, although I haven't been in a few months.
