Question wireless performance with ftp downloads is bad?

I can't find nothing on google or her in the forums...

1. When I try do download from my WiFi lan, the flow starts and kind of dies after several MB, (hundreds more to go)
2.When i ping the server with ping -A x.x.x.x or with ping -i .2 x.x.x.x the flow remains better... why?

What could be done to get it working for regular (newbie) users without having to ping?

the AP is dd-wrt, the network topology is:

|
|#> ): --- my PC in client-mode
| |
| |
|>* (: --- AP dd-wrt in AP-mode
| |
| |
|#> (: --- ftp server in client-mode
|
|----- the ground (for Your orientation)
the sky is there -->

good luck with that one.

what's driving the wifi lan? a physical box? is that what's dying? perhaps the IP stack (or whatever) keeps overflowing because of some bug somewhere?

I could keep going, but you get the point.

Lightbulb

The base station is a Linksys WRT54GL v2.0 with OpenWRT and WEB^2 interface @200MHz and 156mW txpower .
When the channel is clear of other APs troughput is 50% :-) else less than 15% and keeps breaking (re-associating) ...
:-/
